While doing some extended research on my various Mallory family lines, I made an interesting discovery. Actress and singer Sissy Spacek is also a descendant of my colonial Mallory ancestral line. See my post at http://larry-family-history.blogspot.com/2011/01/magna-carta-sureties-descenedant.html.

Spacek was born on Christmas Day, 1949, in Quitman, Texas, the daughter of Virginia Frances (née Spilman) and Edwin Arnold Spacek, Sr., a county agricultural agent. Her mother was a Mayflower descendant, and her paternal grandparents, Mary Cervenka and Arnold A. Špacek (who served as Mayor of Granger, Texas in Williamson County), were of Czech ancestry. Spacek's mother was from the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Spacek was given the nickname "Sissy" by her older brothers.

Spacek married production designer and art director Jack Fisk in 1974. They have two daughters - Schuyler Fisk and Madison Fisk. Schuyler has appeared in several film roles and is pursuing a career as a singer. Spacek and her family live on a horse ranch near Charlottesville, Virginia.

Her line to the old Virginia colonial Mallory family is through Captain Roger Mallory's son, Roger Jr. Her direct ancestral line to the Mallory family follows.

Saher de Quincy, Earl of Winchester, was born in 1155. (1) He was the son of Robert de Quincy Lord of Buckley and Fawside and Orabella de Leuchars. (1,2) In 1175 Saher, married Margaret, daughter of Sir Robert "ès Blanchemains" unknown 3rd Earl of Leicester and Pernel de Grandmesnil. (1,2,3) Saher de Quincy Earl of Winchester was created Earl of Winchester in 1207. (3) Saher de Quincy was one of the twenty-five sureties of the Magna Charta, for which he was excommunicated. His singular christian name of Saher, or Saier, is a likely a corruption from the Saxon Segher, Sigher, or Seagar, a Conqueror. Eliza S. Quincy refers to him as "John de Quincy, created Earl of Winchester by King John, 1207. He was a leader of the Barons who forced John to sign the Magna Charta. (1)" He died on Sunday, 3 November 1219 in Damietta, Holy Land, at age 64 years. (1)

Chas H. Van Horn 1895 Obituary

Looking for Some Help on my Law Ancestors

I have been searching for my LAW family connection for years and I keep adding little pieces to possibly get a bit closer to braking my brickwall. The latest pieces follow.

I have now finally confirmed the name and information on my 4th great grandmother who married my LAW 4th great grandfather. She is Mary Ann SIMMONDS aka Ann SIMMONDS, bap 27 Feb 1810 at St. Andrew Holborn, London, Middlesex, England. She was the daughter of John Lockington SIMMONDS and Mary Maria DAVIES. Sometime in the middle 1830s she married my LAW ancestor. Two possible names are Richard or Fred LAW who seem to be associated with my family. It is unknown if she married LAW in England or here in the US. By 1836, I think the family was located in Howard Co, MO. I have confirmed that all the children of this LAW-SIMMONDS marriage were born in Howard Co, MO. The only LAW in the state of MO on the 1840 census is in Howard Co and his name is Richard. By the 1850 census, Mary Ann is in New Orleans (listed as Mrs. LAW) with the children and running a boarding house. In 1854 she married a William LELAND in NOLA. In 1856 she gave permission for her 16 yr old daughter Margareta LAW to marry Thaddeus Damascus VAN HORN (my 3rd great grandparents). This is the only official record where I she her sign her name as Mary Ann. All of the other records I have only list her as Ann including all the UK records I have seen. A Fred LAW was the person who gave Margareta away at her wedding. It is unknown if this was a brother, uncle, father, or? Sometime around 1857 (probably around Aug 1857 when her mother died in England), she returned to England and then on 4 Jun 1858 she married John Henry BURLINGSON at St. Giles. They were living at 5 Vernon Place, St. George, Bloomsbury Square, London on 7 Feb 1875 when she passed away. I have no idea where she is buried in the London area.

So does anyone know of any male LAW family members who may have married a Mary Ann SIMMONDS aka Ann SIMMONDS? It may be possible that Mary Ann might have been married at least once prior to her marriage to my unknown LAW ancestor, but I don't have any solid proof of this at this time.

My best guess is that I am dealing with a LAW family member living somewhere in or around St. Andrew Holborn during the middle 1830s.

If anyone has any clues, I would appreciate a note. Any piece of the puzzle you may have to pass along no matter how small is most appreciated.

Dr. William Law Van Horn and Family - Update

William L. Van Horn, M.D. Ph.M., of Columbia, Caldwell Parish, Louisiana, is the eldest of ten children of T.D. and Margaretta (Law) Van Horn, and was born in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, October 28, 1857.

His father (Thaddeus Damascus Van Horn, see below) was born in Port Gibson, Mississippi, and his mother was a native of Missouri. When but a small boy T. D. Van Horn was taken to Tallahassee, Florida, where he grew to manhood and received his early education.

During the year 1843 he married Miss Mary Ann Faust, who became the mother of four children: James Faust, Thaddeus Damascus; Mary Permelia and Thaddeus Damascus; James Faust and Mary Permelia now surviving.

In 1851 T. D. Van Horn moved to New Orleans and became the manager of the New Orleans Crescent, the leading whig paper of the South. His first wife dying in 1853, he married Miss Margaretta Law, August 12, 1856. He was the manager of the Crescent until the breaking out of war, when he was commissioned by Governor Moore as aid-de-camp on the staff of the Third brigade of the state troops ans was by him assigned to duty on Colonel Scott’s staff, and afterward aid-de-camp on the staff of General Wheeler.

After the war he assisted in the re-establishment of The Crescent of which he was business manager until the close in 1869. In 1870 he organized the Lafayette bank of New Orleans and was elected cashier, which position he resigned two years later, when he was elected cashier of the Metropolitan bank, retained that position for sixteen years and a half, and then resigned. He is now cashier and bookkeeper of the New Orleans States, one of the leading persons of the city.

He is a very popular and highly respected citizen, and in one way or another has been connected with many important interests and institutions in the Crescent City. As a Mason, he is widely known having taken the thirty-second degree. He has held all of the offices in his lodge of which he is a life member.

Dr. William L. Van Horn began life for himself at the age of sixteen as an apprentice of the drug trade in New Orleans, and at the same time began the study of medicine. He became a student of medicine and pharmacy at the Tulane University of Louisiana, in 1876, and graduated there from both branches in 1879, and during that year began practicing his profession in New Orleans, Louisiana. A year later he removed to Columbia (Caldwell Parish), Louisiana, where he has built up a lucrative practice, in connection with which he conducts a profitable drug business.
He was married in 1880 to Mary Francis, daughter of Judge R. D. Bridger, of Columbia, Louisiana, who bore him one son and one daughter, both of whom are now dead. Mrs. Van Horn died at Pineville, Louisiana, in 1883, the family having recently removed to that place.

After her death the Doctor returned to Columbia, Louisiana., and in January, 1886, married Miss Mattie Parry Mallory, of Panola County, Texas. By this marriage he has had five children: William L., Mattie R., Oliver H., Marguerite Lillian and Vannah Elliot.

The Doctor has acquired considerable property, being the owner of an elegant residence and a large store and business house in Columbia, and of 160 acres of good land situated in a suburb of that town. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, of the Knights of Pythias and of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. His professional standing is first class, and his skill as a physician and surgeon is recognized throughout north Louisiana. He is the leading practitioner of Columbia and the parish of Caldwell.

His skill and integrity have both been recognized by the parish and town by his election twice to the office of coroner of the parish and councilman of the town of Columbia, also by the various insurance companies. He was elected by the New York Life Insurance company, the Mutual Life of New York, the Pennsylvania Mutual of Philadelphia, the Equitable Life of Massachusetts and the Endowment Rank, Knights of Pythias, as their medical examiner in Caldwell parish. He and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal church south.
